Jacob wool is a sought-after fiber for spinners seeking a durable but soft wool with a good staple length. Easy to spin, with a fair amount of loft and spring to it and has just enough luster to give the finished yarn a beautifully subtle sheen. The Jacob are an ancient breed sometimes referred to as the spotted sheep. The Jacob fleece is properly described as white with black spots and is prized by hand spinners and weavers. In England, the Jacob was originally referred to as the Spanish Sheep. Legend has it that the sheep washed ashore from shipwrecks in England after the destruction of the Spanish Armada in 1588.
